BBAU Launches Anti-Ragging Awareness Week; Students Take Out Awareness Rally
Lucknow: Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, inaugurated Anti-Ragging Awareness Week in accordance with the directions of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Various awareness programmes are being organised at the university from 12 to 18 August 2026 under the Anti-Ragging Awareness Week. As part of the initiative, an awareness rally was taken out on 12 August from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium to the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The rally was led by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal. Through the rally, students were sensitised about the adverse consequences of ragging, the university’s zero-tolerance policy against ragging, and the rules and regulations related to ragging.
A lecture session was also organised on the occasion, which was attended by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal, Prof. Sunita Mishra, Proctor Prof. Ram Chandra, Registrar Dr. Ashwini Kumar Singh, and IQAC Director Prof. Shilpi Verma.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal said that ensuring a safe, respectful and fear-free academic environment for every student is among the highest priorities of the university administration. He emphasised that ragging in any form is unacceptable and that the university has a clear and stringent policy against it. He said that newly admitted students are an integral part of the university family and that senior students have a responsibility to guide and support them rather than causing them any form of discomfort or fear. Prof. Mittal called upon all students to follow the rules related to ragging and maintain discipline, mutual respect and harmony on the university campus and in the hostels. He stated that preventing ragging is not solely the responsibility of the administration, but a collective responsibility of every student, teacher, warden and staff member. Everyone must work together to create an environment where students can focus on their studies, talents and personality development without any fear.
Prof. Sunita Mishra said that wardens and concerned officials must remain particularly vigilant to prevent activities such as ragging in the university hostels. She further emphasised the need to sensitise students about the adverse consequences of ragging and the university’s rules in this regard, while encouraging them to maintain a safe, disciplined and harmonious environment.
On the occasion, Proctor Prof. Ram Chandra, Registrar Dr. Ashwini Kumar Singh and Prof. Shilpi Verma also addressed the students and highlighted the adverse consequences of ragging. They stated that ragging can adversely affect the academic and mental development of students. They appealed to students to stay away from ragging and contribute towards maintaining a harmonious, safe and positive environment at the university.
The university administration appealed to all students to completely refrain from activities such as ragging and to immediately inform the university administration about any incident of ragging. Senior students were also urged to maintain a friendly, respectful and supportive approach towards newly admitted students.
During the Anti-Ragging Awareness Week, students and members of the university community will be sensitised about the rules and provisions prohibiting ragging, while also being encouraged to contribute towards creating a safe, disciplined and fear-free academic environment.
Various teaching and non-teaching staff members, research scholars and students were present during the programme.
