BBAU Celebrates Independence Day with a Commitment to Youth Power, Self-Reliance and Nation-Building; Social Change-Makers Honoured

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University celebrated the 80th Independence Day on August 15 with a grand programme. The programme was presided over by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal. The programme commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag and floral tribute to the statue of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar. On the occasion, NCC cadets and security personnel saluted the Tricolour and presented a Guard of Honour to the Vice Chancellor and distinguished guests. Following the flag hoisting, the National Song and National Anthem were sung collectively. At the outset, Registrar Dr. Ashwini Kumar Singh welcomed all those present at the programme.
On the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, under the guidance of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal, a seminar on “Role of Youth in Achieving the Goal of Viksit Bharat” was organised. The Chief Guest was social entrepreneur and Founder & CEO of Dexterity Global, Shri Sharad Vivek Sagar. Registrar Dr. Ashwini Kumar Singh, Proctor Prof. Ram Chandra, and eminent personalities working in various fields were also present on the dais.
Extending his heartfelt greetings and best wishes to the University fraternity and the people of the country on the 80th Independence Day, Vice Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal said that achieving the goal of a developed India requires more than merely attaining economic self-reliance. It is equally important to empower the country in all spheres, including social, political, technological and environmental sectors. He said that India’s present achievements are the result of the relentless efforts and sacrifices of our predecessors who dedicated everything for the freedom of the nation. Therefore, it is our responsibility to always remember their struggles and sacrifices and actively contribute to nation-building. Prof. Mittal emphasised that to increase India’s per capita income and further strengthen the country’s economy, young people must focus particularly on skill development, innovation, positive thinking and leadership capabilities. By continuously updating themselves in accordance with technological and digital transformations, youth can not only secure employment opportunities but also become employment creators. He stated that the values of harmony, sacrifice, character and cooperation are deeply rooted in Indian culture and traditions, giving India a distinctive identity at the global level. He said that while embracing India’s knowledge traditions, civilisation and values of life, the youth must move forward with modern knowledge and technology. Addressing research scholars, the Vice Chancellor said that research should not be limited merely to obtaining a degree; rather, its purpose should be to find solutions to the real problems faced by society and the nation. Research that addresses local problems while contributing directly or indirectly to national development is meaningful in the true sense. He said that India can fully achieve the goal of a developed nation only when it becomes self-reliant.
Prof. Mittal also shared information about various initiatives being undertaken for the convenience and academic development of students at the University and its Amethi Campus. He informed that a computer lab, 24×7 electricity supply and new academic programmes in subjects such as Psychology, English and Geography have been introduced at the Amethi Campus. He called upon everyone to contribute with responsibility and commitment at their respective levels towards achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047. He said that only through collective efforts can a self-reliant, empowered and prosperous India be built, enabling citizens to truly fulfil their duties towards the nation.
Chief Guest and Founder & CEO of Dexterity Global, Shri Sharad Vivek Sagar, in his address, said that every Indian should take pride in being born in a great land that has given the world a rich tradition of knowledge, science, philosophy and humanity. He said that India is progressing rapidly in the fields of science and technology, but this progress is also accompanied by new challenges. Highlighting the global relevance of the Indian knowledge tradition, he said that several scholars across the world have drawn inspiration from Indian Upanishads and works associated with Siddhartha. He observed that while India is becoming increasingly modern and innovative, its civilisation and cultural heritage remain ancient and immensely rich. Referring to Swami Vivekananda, Shri Sagar said that he placed special emphasis on developing self-confidence, leadership qualities and a spirit of dedication towards the nation among the youth. He said that India paved the way for freedom and humanity for several countries in Asia and Africa and has always prioritised the spirit of moving forward together with the entire world. Shri Sagar highlighted that great personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee dedicated their lives to national service and emphasised the concept of servant leadership. He said that to restore India’s position as a Vishwaguru, it is essential to strengthen self-respect and self-confidence along with self-reliance. Referring to the scientific contributions of Vikram Sarabhai, the Green Revolution and the White Revolution, he said that Indian scientists have achieved remarkable accomplishments in various fields. He called upon the youth to come together and advance in the fields of science, technology, innovation and national service and actively contribute to the making of a developed India. He added that India’s strength lies not only in its achievements but also in its generous and humane vision of taking the entire world forward together.
On this occasion, six change-makers who have made exceptional contributions and brought about significant transformation in various fields were honoured by the University with mementoes and shawls. Among them, Smt. Varsha Verma was honoured for her continuous humanitarian work through the organisation Ek Koshish Aisi Bhi, particularly in providing assistance during last rites as well as free ambulance and healthcare services. Shri Devendra Asthana was honoured for his work through the Malviya Mission for the welfare and better future of children affected by leprosy and children from tribal communities. Shri Sudhir Kumar Gupta was honoured for his notable contribution through the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram towards the social and educational upliftment of the Tharu tribal community in particular. In addition, Shri F. C. Moga and Shri Girish Peepal were honoured for their notable contributions to the fields of entrepreneurship and industry. Dr. T. Damodaran, Director, ICAR–Indian Institute of Subtropical Horticulture, Lucknow, was honoured for his significant scientific, research and technological contributions in the field of agriculture.
On the occasion, students presented various cultural programmes, including dance and singing performances. The programme concluded with the distribution of sweets.
During the programme, Deans of various faculties, Heads of Departments, faculty members, non-teaching staff, research scholars and students were present.
