BBAU Sets a New Milestone in Solar Energy: Saves ₹46.48 Lakh in One Year, Advancing Towards Energy Self-Reliance
Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has achieved another significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a Green and Sustainable Campus. During the financial year 2025–26, the University not only made a substantial contribution to environmental conservation through the effective use of solar energy but also achieved a total financial benefit of ₹4.648 million (₹46.48 lakh) by significantly reducing electricity expenditure.
According to the University’s data, the total electricity consumption during the financial year 2025–26 was 2,990,583 units, while its solar power plant generated 9,04,953 units of clean energy. This accounts for 30.26% of the University’s total electricity consumption, highlighting the growing role of solar energy in meeting its energy requirements. Through the utilization of solar power, the University achieved a direct saving of ₹4.226 million (₹42.26 lakh) on electricity purchases. In addition, under the net metering mechanism, the University exported 49,130 units of surplus solar energy to the electricity grid, earning a rebate of ₹422,000 (₹4.22 lakh). Together, the direct savings and rebate resulted in a total financial benefit of ₹4.648 million (₹46.48 lakh) during the financial year.
The University administration further stated that work is currently underway on a 1,000 kWp solar power project to further strengthen its renewable energy capacity. Upon completion, the project will enable a significantly larger share of the University’s electricity demand to be met through clean and renewable energy, thereby reducing electricity costs further while substantially lowering carbon emissions.
On this occasion, Vice-Chancellor of BBAU, stated that the University remains firmly committed to environmental conservation, energy efficiency, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He emphasized that maximizing the use of clean and renewable energy such as solar power not only provides economic benefits to the University but also contributes significantly towards ensuring a cleaner and safer environment for future generations. Prof. Mittal further added that the University will continue to promote green energy, energy conservation, and environmentally sustainable technologies through innovative initiatives, strengthening BBAU’s position among the country’s leading green and energy-efficient universities.
