The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal, congratulated the organising committee on the successful conduct of the programme. He stated that cervical cancer is one of the major cancers affecting women, with almost all cases being associated with persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). He emphasised that HPV vaccination, regular screening and timely medical consultation are extremely important for preventing the disease. He explained that tests such as the Pap smear and HPV test help identify early abnormal changes in the cervix. Prof. Mittal highlighted the need to overcome social stigma and lack of awareness surrounding cervical cancer. He further stated that such awareness programmes not only encourage women to become more conscious of their health but also help them understand the importance of prevention, timely screening and appropriate treatment.
Prof. S. Victor Babu stated that the objective of such awareness programmes is to disseminate accurate information on important health-related issues and sensitise society. Cervical cancer is a serious health challenge; however, timely screening, HPV vaccination and appropriate treatment can help prevent the disease and ensure its effective management. He added that the University is committed to continuously encouraging such health awareness initiatives among students and the wider community so that people become more informed and responsible towards their health.
Dr. Jyotsna Mehta, Gynaecologist at City Hospital, Lucknow, shared detailed information on the medical and practical aspects of cervical cancer. She explained that cervical cancer develops in the cervix and is primarily caused by persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Discussing its early and advanced symptoms, she emphasised that these signs should not be ignored. She particularly stressed the need to spread awareness that cervical cancer is not an incurable disease and can be completely treated through timely diagnosis and appropriate medical intervention. She also highlighted the importance of HPV vaccination, regular screening, Pap smear tests and HPV tests. Furthermore, she explained that treatment options such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are available depending on the stage of the disease. She encouraged women to remain conscious of their health and seek medical advice without hesitation in case of any unusual symptoms.
Dr. Animesh Agrawal, Oncologist at Apollo Hospital, elaborated on the significant role of HPV vaccination in preventing cervical cancer. He informed the audience that vaccines such as Gardasil and Cervavac are available to protect against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Explaining their mechanism and effectiveness, he stated that these vaccines help provide protection against major HPV strains responsible for cervical cancer. He highlighted that vaccination during adolescence, before exposure to HPV infection, is considered more effective. He further emphasised the need to increase awareness about vaccination while giving equal priority to regular screening and periodic health check-ups. He clarified that although the HPV vaccine is an effective preventive measure, it is not a substitute for regular cervical cancer screening.
Dr. Sumedha Neelu Dwivedi, Founder of Project Anandi, elaborated on the concept, objectives and initiatives undertaken under the project. She explained that Project Anandi aims to create awareness among women and adolescent girls about health, hygiene and, particularly, menstrual health, while addressing the social misconceptions and hesitation associated with these issues. She emphasised the importance of encouraging women to speak openly about health-related concerns, access accurate information and seek timely medical consultation. She also highlighted the significance of community participation and awareness programmes in this direction.
Dr. Sudha Bajpai stated that health awareness should not remain limited to information alone but must become an integral part of everyday behaviour. She emphasised that open discussions on issues such as cervical cancer and addressing prevailing social misconceptions are essential. She added that the participation of young people can help disseminate health awareness messages on a wider scale. Such initiatives play an important role in building a healthy and aware society.
At the end of the programme, the organising committee expressed its gratitude to the dignitaries and faculty members by presenting them with saplings and shawls. Prof. Dhirendra Pandey delivered the vote of thanks.
