Lucknow: Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, organised various activities under the Developing Innovation Culture and Entrepreneurship (DICE) programme at the PM SHRI Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Piparsand, Lucknow, with the objective of encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship and creative thinking among students. The programme was attended by Prof. Naveen Kumar Arora, President of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), BBAU, Prof. Sufiya Ahmad, Dr. Madhulika, Incubator Manager at Navkalpana and Ms. Suman Katiyar, Principal of the school, along with other faculty members. Conducted under the aegis of the Institution’s Innovation Council and the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) of the university, the initiative aims to create awareness about entrepreneurship among students, encourage them to develop new ideas, and provide them with the necessary guidance to transform their innovations into practical solutions.

In his address, Prof. Naveen Kumar Arora stated that the primary objective of this initiative is to promote innovation, creative thinking and a scientific outlook among school students while providing them with a suitable platform to recognise their talents and capabilities. He emphasised that children possess immense potential to develop new ideas and adopt creative approaches to problem-solving. With this objective, students will be encouraged to present their innovative ideas across various subjects and fields in the future. These ideas will be evaluated, and the most promising and practical ones will be selected to provide the students with opportunities to participate in state- and national-level competitions. Prof. Arora highlighted that such initiatives play a significant role in developing scientific thinking, self-confidence, problem-solving abilities and an interest in innovation among students. They will also encourage children to translate their ideas into reality, showcase their talents and contribute to the country’s development in the future.

Prof. Sufiya Ahmad elaborated on the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), patents and copyrights. She explained that intellectual property rights play a crucial role in providing legal protection to new ideas, inventions, creative works and innovations. Clarifying the distinction between patents and copyrights, she explained that patents protect new inventions, whereas copyrights safeguard the rights associated with literary, artistic and other creative works. She encouraged students to remain aware of the intellectual property rights associated with their ideas and creative works while pursuing innovation.

Dr. Madhulika, in her address, provided detailed information about the concept of startups, the process of establishing them and the startup registration mechanism. She explained that transforming an innovative idea into a successful enterprise requires proper planning and an understanding of the necessary documentation and prescribed procedures. She also highlighted the various stages of startup registration, the required formalities and the processes involved in establishing an enterprise.

As part of the programme, various sessions and activities were organised for students on entrepreneurship skill development, field visits to generate new ideas, the development of proof of concept and prototypes, business model preparation, the entrepreneurship and startup support ecosystem in India, and intellectual property rights. Other activities included a Demo Day to showcase proof-of-concept projects developed by students and the submission of ideas for the School Innovation Contest through PM SHRI schools. These activities aimed to help students develop an innovation-oriented mindset, propose creative solutions to problems and explore opportunities to become entrepreneurs in the future. The initiative marks a significant step towards fostering a culture of innovation at the school level and familiarising students with opportunities in higher education and the startup ecosystem.
